Technology
I am a huge computer nerd, especially regarding Unix/Linux systems, programming, and computing in general.
Here is a FASCINATING short documentary from AT&T's Bell Labs on the Unix operating system.
Linux
On my personal computer, I run a Linux-based operating system, also called a distribution, named Debian. I use Debian for 99% of my tasks, like checking email, browsing the Internet, developing my Neocities sites, programming, etc. I can even run most of my games. For games that I cannot run on Linux, I either use a Windows 11 virtual machine or, for games that require anti-cheat, I boot into a separate Windows 11 partition on my SSD.
Virtual machines are, in essence, programs that simulate a full computer (called a 'guest') and allow you to run another operating system and programs which are isolated from your main computer (called the 'host').
The main case I make for using Linux versus something like Windows 10/11, or even MacOS, is that most Linux distributions are free of charge. Additionally, Linux based operating systems have a rich library of free software available, of which many are decent alternatives to Windows or MacOS only programs, like Microsoft Office. Linux does not contain the telemetry that Windows or MacOS collects on its users. It also has a large community of developers who constantly update software and monitor for vulnerabilities. Because of this, Linux is compatible with thousands of hardware components and can run on almost any computer. Linux is a great choice for someone who has an older computer that cannot run Windows 11, or wishes to be more cautious about their digital privacy.
Fun Fact: Linux is the base layer for Android OS for smartphones. Billions of devices run Linux, likely including many of the servers which provide you with access to the Internet.
Computerphile
One of my favorite YouTube channels about computers is Computerphile. They have hundreds of videos on various topics in computing, hosted by real university professors and other computer science professionals. I can't recommend it enough!
